New MakerSpace opens in Coleman
Digitization Lab and Makerspace now open at the Coleman Area Library
Free your imagination at COLLAB + Create! The Coleman Area Library invites everyone to explore the new Coleman Digitization Lab (COLLAB) and Create MakerSpace. This recently launched area of the library offers equipment and tools to encourage creative endeavors, hands-on learning and preservation of memories and documents.
The COLLAB digitization area features technology that local residents can use to transfer family history into digital format. Assistant Director Amy Comber Gross said “the library has always been a place to share stories and knowledge and this exciting new addition will allow more people to preserve and share those stories.” The new equipment includes a device for VHS-to-Digital transfer, a small scanner for photos and a large scanner for objects such as books, newspapers or scrapbook pages. “Digitizing your old home movies and photographs is a wonderful way to preserve family memories for future generations” said Comber Gross.
The new Create! Makerspace supplies kids and adults with what they need to craft items such as greeting cards with a Cricut machine or design or repair objects with a 3D pen. Amy Comber Gross remarked that “part of the library’s mission is to inspire lifelong learning and this makerspace offers a variety of tools and materials to promote creativity and transform ideas into reality.” The library's Create! MakerSpace also has equipment that allows people to create their own green-screen video or record a podcast.
Instructions for the equipment can be found at each station or one-on-one assistance is available by appointment. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
