Accomplishing What Matters: A Century of Well-Being Support
Accomplishing What Matters 002: Joe Blewett, Family & Children’s Services.
One hundred years ago a group of well-meaning Midlanders got together to improve their community. This group was as forward-thinking as they were generous. They helped people prepare for winter, provided eyeglasses and conducted a variety of social-work related support. Their forward seeing pragmatism was in the form of offering mental health counseling. Today, 100 years later, their vision lives on at Family & Children’s Services (FCS).
There have been twists and turns in the 100-year history of providing services to the Midland community. This included offering foster care and adoption services, monitoring well-being and overall case management for those in need. One area that has not wavered has been Outpatient Therapist counseling services. In other words, mental well-being support.
Mental illness impacts 1 in 5 people in the United States. That is 1 person per family, 1 to two people in line at the grocery store and, unfortunately, a handful of students per classroom. While the statistics likely haven’t changed over time, the stigma related to mental wellbeing continues to improve. Albeit, the stigma around mental health has a way to go.
Thanks to the United Way of Midland County, local foundations and community support, Family & Children’s Services removes barriers to mental well-being. These barriers include transportation problems, lack of insurance and limited income just to name a few. FCS has countless stories of people that have been helped. This has included improving people’s struggles with substance abuse, improved coping strategies and parenting support. Counseling has supported those suffering from depression, trauma and low self-esteem. Treatment has enhanced the quality of life of families and employees. And the list goes on.
In 2025 Family & Children’s Services will turn 100 years old. This milestone is counted in more than years. It includes the countless lives that have been improved through these services. With on-going support Family & Children’s Services will support Midland for another 100 years.
Do you have a Midland County story you would like to tell that aligns with our vision?
